Fluid Mechanics & The Continuum
Before we can design wings or analyze shockwaves, we must understand the very nature of the medium we fly through. This module introduces the fundamental properties of fluids—density, pressure, and viscosity—and explains the mathematical frameworks we use to model their motion. You will learn when it's safe to treat air as a continuous fluid and when that assumption breaks down in high-altitude hypersonic flight.
Syllabus
What Makes a Fluid Flow: Shear Stress & The Continuum Hypothesis
Understand why fluids deform continuously and when the continuum assumption holds true.
The Three Pillars of State: Density, Pressure, and Viscosity
Define and relate the primary thermodynamic properties used in aerodynamic analysis.
Conservation of Mass and Momentum: From Control Volumes to Bernoulli
Apply fundamental physics to flowing fluids to derive mass conservation and the Bernoulli equation.
